The right month depends on the landscapes you want to explore, the pace you prefer and the conditions you are comfortable travelling in.
Drier months, different priorities
June to October is generally a drier period in the northern parks. Vegetation may thin and animals can gather near dependable water, but conditions differ between parks and years. Popular periods can also mean greater demand for camps. Choose your route and accommodation together rather than selecting dates alone.
The appeal of a greener landscape
Rain brings fresh vegetation, changing skies and a different atmosphere on the plains. March to May often brings heavier rainfall, while shorter rains commonly occur later in the year; neither follows a precise timetable. Ask about road access, seasonal camp closures and how a programme would adapt to wet conditions.
One country, several seasonal checks
A northern safari, a southern wilderness stay, a Kilimanjaro climb and a Zanzibar finish each need their own seasonal assessment. Migration routes should reflect likely herd areas for your dates, not a promise of crossings. On the coast, consider tides and wind as well as rainfall.
