The migration is a moving ecological story. Follow seasonal possibilities while leaving room for everything else the Serengeti offers.
A cycle, not a calendar appointment
Wildebeest and zebra movements respond to rain, grazing and water. Southern plains are often considered for calving-focused travel early in the year, while western and northern areas attract attention at other stages. These patterns are planning context, not fixed dates or guaranteed herd locations.
Camp location matters
The Serengeti is vast. A camp suitable for one month may be far from the areas you hope to explore in another. Ask where each camp will operate on your dates, how access works and what alternative viewing opportunities exist if the herds move differently.
Do not build everything around a crossing
River crossings cannot be booked, timed or guaranteed. Patient observation may mean long waits without the event a traveller imagined. Allow time to enjoy resident wildlife, kopjes and changing habitats too. Never encourage a guide to crowd animals or obstruct their movement.
General planning guidance, not medical or entry advice. Check current official travel and entry requirements before departure. Sample journeys, prices and supplier arrangements require confirmation.
